Informants say Fr. Mick is in Lanao del Norte

OZAMIZ City - Catholic - run radio dxDD AM received reports from its reliable informants that Irish missionary Fr. Michael Sinnott, SSC is still alive, healthy and now in a remote area in the hinterlands of Sapad, Lanao del Norte.

The two informants met with DxDD public affairs personnel Tuesday morning, October 27 and shared information about Fr. Mick.

The two informants’ identities have been withheld for security reasons. The meeting between the informants and dxDD personnel took place in Aurora, Zambonga del Sur.

They furnished the mediamen a sketch where Fr. Mick is said to be held captive in Sapad.

The abductors are reportedly members of a kidnap-for-ransom group led by local pirate Latip Jamat alias Commander Latip who operates mainly in Lanao area.

But they cannot confirm the reports that kidnap-for-ransom group led by local pirate Guingona Samal alias Kumander Ingo who operates mainly in Zamboanga del Sur is part of the operation.

It was reported that Samal was initially tagged as the owner of the watercraft used in transporting the 79-year-old Columban missionary from Pagadian City to Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Lanao del Norte.

But they said the Irish priest was turned over by his abductors to the group of Commander Latip Jamat and one Dr. Abu, a Abusayaf commander.

“The bandits arrived in Sitio Bilik around 7:00 P.M. on October 18 and they passed in the remote areas of Sitio Simsiman, Sitio Matito and arrived in Sitio Mhatar around 11:40 pm where they fired one round as signal.”

The informants added that on the same date, Fr. Sinnott’s abductors arrived at the location of Dr. Abu located in the mountain area of Sapad near in Sitio Rombanon, Bulandosa and Tuka Alaw.

Informants added that the possible exits of the bandits for their escape are in the remote areas of Sitio Bulandosa, Tuka Alaw, Katipunan, Sitio Rombanon and Sitio Camangas.

They mentioned that the bandits received medicines for the abducted priest from the crisis committee last Wednesday, October 21.
The informants said the Irish priest is healthy because his abductors provided him a paramedic to regularly check his blood pressure.

On the other hand, Lanao del Norte’s provincial information officer Lyndon Calica said that he is doubtful of the information given by the informants.

He added that the sitios in Sapad being mentioned by the informants are non-existing.
Meanwhile, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has created its own special task force to track down Fr. Sinnott’s abductors.

MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu said “Task Force Sinnott” was created last Tuesday upon instruction of their central committee.

Kabalu said “except for coordination” with the government forces, the MILF operates on their own.

“The Armed Forces of the Philippines has no involvement in our operations,” Kabalu said.

He added that the MILF leadership “doesn’t entertain demands from the kidnappers.”
So far, he said, no contacts between the MILF and the kidnappers have been established “but we have the information on the area and they may be located.”

He also said that they have no information yet about Fr. Sinnott’s health conditions but he believes the 79-year old priest is alive and well.

Kabalu said about a hundred MILF troops have been made part of the task force. ( Neptalie Batolenio)

MisOc gears up for mariculture after grouper spawning

GROUPER broodstock in the Misamis Occidental successfully spawned after two months of conditioning, jumpstarting the development of the mariculture industry in the province.

The broodstock were conditioned for two (2) months in a hatchery at the Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park (MOAP) before finally producing 15 million eggs last August and another 22 million eggs in September.
With the volume of eggs, MOAP hatchery manager Tito Piloton says they are already having trouble finding space for all the grouper larvae produced from the spawned eggs.

The 8.8-million hatchery features two 160-ton broodstock tanks, eight 15-ton larval tanks, twelve 15-ton natural food tanks, a 135-ton reservoir, and a generator.
It was completed December last year through the collaboration of the Australian government through the Philippine-Australia Local Sustainability (PALS) Program, the Misamis Occidental Provincial Government, and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC).

SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department Chief Dr. Joebert Toledo explained that the spawning is a very good development for Misamis Occidental because “grouper broodstock spawn year-round” providing a stable and accessible supply of grouper seed which will be needed by fish cage farmers.

SEAFDEC has been optimizing the breeding and hatchery of grouper since 1989 and is now providing the technical support, technology, and supervision for the MOAP hatchery.

With the projected growth in hatchery production, MOAP manager Manoling Yap hopes to construct additional larval rearing tanks for the hatchery, a feed mill, and eventually also set up mariculture cages in Panguil Bay.
Misamis Occidental Governor Loreto Leo Ocampos is pushing for the farming of grouper in floating sea cages.

To date, a corporation, owned by 4 multi-purpose cooperatives and an NGO, has set up 32 nursery cages and 16 grow-out cages off the town of Sinacaban.
Grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) is locally known as lapu-lapu or pogapo (in Misamis Occidental), which is a highly valued marine fish with great demands both in the local and international markets.

Aside from grouper, the MOAP hatchery is also projected to produce milkfish, tilapia, catfish, mud crabs, and seaweed. The seed will then be used to supply fishponds and fish cages in Panguil Bay, Murcilleagus Bay, and coastal coves around the province.

The MOAP project aims to create direct and indirect employment for coastal fish farmers, promote aquaculture; and help the province become a major provider of agri-aqua products in Northern Mindanao through equitable coastal resources management and sustainable aquaculture development. (SEAFDEC)

The media and journalists should not allow themselves to be used as means of politicians to further their political agenda or to malign political opponents.

NUJP particularly deplore the wanton abuse of the airwaves by block-timers paid by politicians whose sole purpose is to promote their clients or demolish the adversaries of their patrons. Said media organization are alarmed that this early and months before the election season, programs specializing on personal attacks or praise for or against politicians already proliferate.

This is a slap on journalism and legitimate journalists and this kind of block-timers should harbor no illusion that we consider them as journalists. They are nothing but paid hacks. ( Mae Agot Delarmente)

The objective of this program is to help Filipino fiancé(e)s and spouses of foreign nationals make informed decisions regarding their marriage to foreign nationals and to prepare them for their adjustments in cross-cultural marriages.

Among others, Filipino fiancé(e)s and spouses are provided with the information on Migration laws affecting them; Welfare and support services available abroad; Rights of migrants overseas; and Coping up with problematic or difficult domestic situations.

Dizon added that United States of America, Canada and Japan are the major countries destination of the immigrants from Misamis Occidental.

Manolo Villablanca Tibe, emigrant services officer II and a member of Task Force Against Human Trafficking said that CFO extends help to the Filipino immigrants being abused by their spouses.

“Pag-may mga kaso ng abuses, maltreatment these are being reported to the CFO and we assist then either in repatriation or filing of cases against their spouses and then we black lists these foreigners kasi pag-ganyan madali lang sila makakuha ng divorce,” Tibe added.

The work of CFO is conducted under a program framework of activities to serve Filipino communities overseas. This framework consists of the following four program areas: Migrant Social and Economic Integration, Filipino Education and Heritage, Filipino Unity and National Development and Policy Development and Data Banking.

Migrant Social and Economic Integration aims to ensure that all Filipinos migrating to other countries are adequately prepared to meet the practical and psychological problems attendant to international migration. This will also undertake activities designed to provide Filipino emigrants with adequate structured information and advice about all aspects of migration to their countries of destination, as well as assistance in achieving early social and economic adjustment within their new environment.

This programme also provides for a continuing linkage with registered Filipino migrants, and a means by which migrants can be assisted by cooperating organizations in the process of adjustment and settlement in their host countries.

It will also assist in promoting and facilitating the reintegration of returning migrants into the Filipino national mainstream. (Mae Delarmente, Neptalie Batolenio)
